Unique Plug-in Ford Escape Hybrid

The U.S. Department of Energy has received a gift from “the Blue Oval.” This is a unique car a plug-in Escape Hybrid with the following characteristics: runs on E85, can drive for 30 miles using pure electric power at 40 mph speed, its consumption is 88 mpg within the city and 50 mpg in the highway conditions.

The car is powered by a 4-cylinder engine accompanied by a Johnson Controls/Saft’s 10kW lithium-ion battery pack. Up to its 70% depleted state the car uses pure electric energy, and then the gasoline engine is involved. The emission of this car is 60 percent less than that of any of common gas car. This index can be increased up to 90 percent if the vehicle uses cellulosic ethanol.
Ford has 20 of such cars in stock. They are prepared for research and government bodies and aimed to promote penetration and popularity of hybrid vehicles. According to Ford’s president of the Americas, Mark Fields, the problem can not be solved at once. The company realizes the importance to represent people multiple technology alternative to achieve commercial viability.
